The next morning, a boy in the dorm knocked on Terry and Mike’s door. “Hey, Terry, I thought I’d bring ya’ the Sunday paper. You’re on the cover of the sports section again!”

Terry opened the door; smiled and said, “Hey, thanks. Come on in, let’s see what they had to say.”

The headline read: “Daniels Steals Gloves Show; Wallace Wins” – Daniels spoiled the anticipated show from Cookie Wallace at the Golden Gloves last night by stealing the admiration of some 4,000 fans in the Dallas Memorial Auditorium a bout earlier .

While Wallace, the reigning National AAU runner-up, sat smiling in the gloves-box outside the ring, Daniels spotted his 292-pound challenger, Charles Sites, an even 100 pounds and quickly registered a first-round TKO .

The audience loved Daniels’ performance, but they were waiting for the Cookie-Emmit Banks production, last of a 34-bout semifinals program. It didn’t take them long to discover that most of the Open Heavyweight action was recorded in the 1:58 it took Daniels to dispose of his burly opponent .

“Yeah, they said Banks was the 1957 New Mexico champion, and he looked like he was 30 years old. All he did was tie Wallace up and neither one got off any solid shots. The crowd started booing by the second round and Cookie wasn’t used to that. He won a unanimous decision, but the crowd still booed at the end,” Terry said.

“Well, I’m sure your name’s gonna be brought up a lot on campus Monday,” the boy said.

Terry called the family after church to share the exciting news and assured them he was ready for the fight.

“I know this Cookie Wallace is going to let it all out in our fight, to try and win back the fans,” he said, “but I’ve really improved the power and timing of my combinations. My coach said for me to take it to him early, and that’s what I plan on doing.”

They wished him well and told him to call them with the news right after his fight the following night.
